Lineage II

Worth knowing for its castle sieges, player rivalries and commitment to long-term progression.

Why I recommend it

I recommend Lineage II because it represents a form of MMORPG design that asks players to depend on each other. Clan membership matters, open-world PvP has consequences and castle sieges turn player organisation into the main event. Progress feels tied to status within the server rather than a sequence of isolated activities.

It is also useful as a reference point for games built around social friction. Rivalries can last, territory has meaning and individual progress feeds into collective goals. That structure gives communities reasons to organise beyond simply clearing content together. Lineage II can feel slow and punishing by modern standards, but those same qualities help explain why its strongest moments carry weight. I would recommend it less as a comfortable introduction to MMORPGs and more as a clear example of how rules can create lasting player stories.

What stands out

  • Clan-driven competition
  • Large-scale castle sieges
  • Consequential open-world PvP
  • Long-term character progression
  • Strong server politics

Best for

MMORPG history enthusiastsPlayers who enjoy clan warfareFans of demanding progressionDesigners studying social conflict

Worth knowing

The progression can be slow, and some of its systems feel dated. It demands more patience than most modern MMORPGs.

How I've experienced it

My view is based mainly on Lineage II’s place in MMORPG history and its reputation for clan-led conflict, rather than a recent full playthrough.
